If you listen to the news, you know artificial intelligence — or “AI” for short — is about to take over the world.
The good news for you and your fellow RTs is that it is not likely to take over your jobs. Bedside caregiver roles are largely seen as among the most AI-proof positions in the entire job market.
But that doesn’t mean AI won’t figure into your professional lives. AI is being used to enhance everything from diagnosis to treatment for patients, and it is also beginning to play a bigger role in the job market.
Here are four ways you can use AI in your next job search:
Let AI serve as your career counselor: Job seekers often hire career counselors to help them decide where to go next in their careers. But that can get costly. Try inputting key details into an AI tool — such as your degree, work experience, significant accomplishments, career highlights, and interests and goals for the future — and then ask the AI to give you a list of 5-10 job titles that match your experience and goals. Do a deeper dive on AI to look more closely at the ones you find most interesting.
Ask AI to help you craft a winning resume and cover letter: Copy and paste the job description of the job you’d like to apply for into the AI tool and have it offer recommendations on including keywords and other elements into your resume. You can also ask the AI to optimize your resume for an applicant tracking system (ATS). Many organizations now use ATS to screen applicants.
Use AI to update your LinkedIn “about” section: Many recruiters and hiring managers will turn to LinkedIn first to learn more about a potential candidate, so you want your LinkedIn page to pack as much power as possible. Copy and paste your current “about” text into AI and ask it to rewrite the section based on all of the other inputs you have already given it, specifically requesting it to craft the section in a way that will highlight your experience, abilities, and passion for the profession.
Put AI to work during interview prep: Once you land an interview with a hiring manager, use AI to predict which interview questions you are most likely to face based on the job description and your previous inputs regarding your education, work experience, etc. AI can help you craft winning answers for all. You can also specifically request behavioral interviewing questions and questions to ask the hiring manager.
Of course, the key to using AI successfully is to carefully read over everything AI suggests and/or writes for you before you use it to make sure it truly does match your professional details and goals. The technology may have come a long way, but it still needs a human eye to verify information and add a personal touch.
