AARC Statement on RT Overnight Coverage

The AARC is aware of the recent decision by Mayo Clinic Health System to transition away from overnight, in‑person respiratory therapist (RT) coverage at select hospitals. Respiratory therapists are vital members of the care team, particularly in acute care settings where rapid, hands‑on assessment and intervention are essential. We have concerns about any care model that reduces direct RT presence at the bedside.

We are working closely with the Minnesota Society for Respiratory Care leaders to better understand the impact of this change and to ensure that the role of RTs in delivering safe, high-quality patient care remains clear and supported.

We will continue to monitor this situation and advocate for the profession and the patients we serve.
